Below are the rules and regulation set by the organizing committee of UMP Badminton Open Tournament 2017.
1.0 Registration
- Only complete Team Registration Fees are accepted.
- Player’s name must be according to the name in IC during registration; otherwise the player will be disqualified. E.g. Tan Kwok Yue registered as Alan Tan (nickname) will be disqualified.
- For Veteran Men’s Double category, players must present their IC to prove their age is qualified (40 years old or above) during registration, otherwise the pair will be disqualified.
- A player can only represent and participate in one team in this tournament.
- Every player in the team must show his/her IC during registration on game day upon request from the Organizer.
- Team leader is reminded to bring the payment receipt for confirmation entries.
- All teams are required to keep their receipts and bring along for registration during event day.
- Teams are still allowed to change their player during team manager meeting before Day1 of competition starts. Players name will be finalized after Day1 team manager meeting.
- Registration will be based on the latest tentative release by the organizer. Late comers will not be entertained and will be immediately disqualified from this competition.
- Only 3 shuttles will be used in each game.
- Registration fees are not refundable. Registration fees is collected for game management purpose, it will not be used on prize.
- If Women’s Double and Veteran Men’s Double category’s participation is too low, organizers will have the right to cancel these two categories from UMP Badminton Open 2017. Participants will be informed with the latest decision.
2.0 Qualification
Men’s Double Group Category
- Each team must consist of 3 pairs of men’s double, with an optional of additional 2 substitute players. A team can consist of 6 to 8 male players.
- No age limit is imposed.
- Players are required to wear proper sport attire and sport shoes during competition. If not, players will be required to change to proper sport wear.
- If player fails to show up after 15 minutes of calling during their match, the respective team will be disqualified.
- Each player can only play ONCE in their respective match. E.g. Players played for first men’s double game cannot play again in second and third men’s double in the same match.
- Players who joined Olympics Games, BWF World Championships, Thomas Cup, Sudirman Cup, Commonwealth Games, SEA Games, Super Series Premier, Super Series, Grand Prix Gold, Grand Prix, International Challenge are NOT ALLOWED to represent and participate in any team.
Women’s Double Category
- Each pair must consist only of 2 female players. No substitute player is allowed.
- No age limit is imposed.
- Players are required to wear proper sport attire and sport shoes during competition. If not, players will be required to change to proper sport wear.
- If player fails to show up after 15 minutes of calling during their match, the respective pair will be disqualified.
- Players who joined Olympics Games, BWF World Championships, Uber Cup, Sudirman Cup, Commonwealth Games, SEA Games, Super Series Premier, Super Series, Grand Prix Gold, Grand Prix, International Challenge are NOT ALLOWED to represent and participate in any team.
Veteran Men’s Double Category
- Each pair must consist only of 2 male players. No substitute player is allowed.
- Players must be 40-years-old or above.
- Players are required to wear proper sport attire and sport shoes during competition. If not, players will be required to change to proper sport wear.
- If player fails to show up after 15 minutes of calling during their match, the respective pair will be disqualified.
- Players who joined Olympics Games, BWF World Championships, Thomas Cup, Sudirman Cup, Commonwealth Games, SEA Games, Super Series Premier, Super Series, Grand Prix Gold, Grand Prix, International Challenge are NOT ALLOWED to represent and participate in any team.
3.0 Match Format
Men’s Double Group Category
- Round Robin Stage
- The team shall play in sub-group where all team play against each other. A final overall ranking order shall be achieve. Team that rank champion in sub-group shall proceed to quarter final.
- Games will be best of 3 games (win 2 out of three games). First side to score 21 points wins the game.
- When score reaches 20-all, the game will be called to 22 points. The maximum point for each game is 30 points.
- Each team that has best out of 3 pairs win will win the match. For example, team A play against team B. Team A has 2 pairs win and 1 pair lose against team B, team A wins.
- Every win receives two points, every loss receives one point. For example, if there are five teams in a tournament and the top team has four wins it will score eight points; a team with three wins and a defeat will receive seven points, and so on.
- In the event that two teams have the same overall points, the winner of the meeting between the two will be winner.
- If three teams or more than three teams having the same overall points, the total number of pairs won subtracted by pairs lost will be used. If there is no winner under the conditions above, the team which has higher overall set difference will be qualified for quarter finals. In the case of both conditions are applied and there is still no winner, the team which has higher overall point difference will be qualified. If the teams are still equal, it will be up to Referees discretion.
- Quarter finals, Semi-finals & Finals
- Games will be based on knock out system
- Team with best out of 3 pairs wins(win 2 out of three pairs).
- Each pair will play based on best out of 3 games (win 2 out of three games). First side to score 21 points wins the game.
- When score reaches 20-all, the game will be called to 22 points. The maximum point for each game is 30 points.
Women’s Double Category & Veteran Men’s Double Category
- Round Robin Stage
- Four individual pair will be placed in a group. A final overall ranking order shall be achieve. Individual pair that rank champion and runner up in group shall proceed to quarter final.
- Each individual pair will play 3 games.
- Games will be best of 3 games (win 2 out of three games). First side to score 21 points wins the game.
- When score reaches 20-all, the game will be called to 22 points. The maximum point for each game is 30 points.
- Every win receives two points, every loss receives one point. For example, there are four individual pairs in a tournament and the top individual pair has three wins will be awarded six points; an individual pair with two wins and one defeat will be awarded five points, and so on.
- In the event that two individual pairs having the same overall points, the individual pair which has higher overall set difference will be qualified for quarter finals. If there is no winner under the conditions above, then the individual pair which has higher overall point difference will be qualified. If two individual pairs are still equal, it will be up to Referees discretion.

4.0 Officials and Appeals
- The umpire, where appointed, is in charge of the match, the court and its immediate surrounds. The umpire shall report to the referee.
- Umpire shall
- Give a decision on any appeal regarding a point of dispute, if made before the next service is delivered.
- Ensure players and spectators are kept informed of the progress of the match.
- Record and report to the referee all matters in relation to continuous play, misconduct and penalties.
- Umpire has the authority to disqualify any player for unsportsmanlike behavior.
- An official’s decision is final on all points of fact for which that official is responsible.
- Any participant that wish to submit appeal or complaint on other teams’ qualification must provide solid written prove of the accusation with RM500 complaint fee. If accused party is proven guilty, RM500 will be returned to appealer. Otherwise, RM500 will be confiscated.
- If the accused party is proven guilty, the respective team will be disqualified.
*Organizer shall remain the rights to change the rules and regulations without prior notice*
